Sheriff Bob Alford announces the implementation of Commercial Vehicle Enforcement

Posted on Oct 2, 2007

Sheriff Bob Alford announces the implementation of Commercial Vehicle Enforcement as of Oct. 1, 2007 in Johnson County.

Deputies Mathew Dill and James Novian comprise the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, and were selected through an interview process, by a panel of supervisors. Both attended certification training at the DPS academy in Austin, along with two other Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Deputies.

Dep. Dill and Dep. Novian will utilize two new F-150 extended cab Ford trucks to haul needed equipment including scales, in order to weigh trucks in various areas of the county.

“The goals of the program are to reduce traffic collisions, fatalities and injuries, and to facilitate safe and expeditious vehicular and pedestrian traffic on public roadways,” Sheriff Alford stated. “We are responding to concerns raised by citizens of our county, who travel our roads daily amid a greatly increased commercial truck traffic over the past couple of years.

Our taxpayers expect traffic enforcement from us, which includes enforcing truck weights and measures. In order to respond to this need, we have created the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit. We want to thank the Commissioners Court for their foresight and concern for the safety of our citizens on our roadways, and for granting these positions.”

Captain Mike Gilbert stated that goals for this program will be met through education, public support, enforcement and through cooperative assistance of city, county, state, and federal road maintenance.

The Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit will work under the Uniformed Patrol Division of the Sheriff’s Office and will conduct daily enforcement throughout the county, weighing trucks at specific locations.
